Fort Worth Plans To Hire Only Non-Smokers

FORT WORTH, Texas – City officials are reportedly studying the idea of telling smokers that they need not apply for jobs. Smoke-free hiring policies have reportedly been used by many other private employers, which include the Baylor Health Care System; however city officials reportedly stated that they have not yet found any other cities which have adopted such a plan.

The Tarrant County Sheriff’s Department also reportedly does not allow their employees from smoking or chewing tobacco while on duty or in uniform. Nationally, 29 states and the District of Columbia have legal protections for smokers, but Texas is not one of them.

Fort Worth in Need of Substitute Teachers

FORT WORTH, Texas – Reports state that the Fort Worth district officials are having problems with shortage in substitute teachers and that they are reportedly taking into consideration loosening requirements to make sure that classrooms are covered.

A recent review being conducted by the district showed that about 1 in 6 teacher absences were not filled. District officials analyzed data for the month of February and learned that out of 10,318 teacher absences, 1,600 or 15.5% went unfilled.

A sampling of other Tarrant County districts also showed that 3% to 8% of teacher absences also went unfilled during the same period.

Man Sentenced 50 Years in Prison for 2011 Fatal Shooting

FORT WORTH, Texas — Recently, a Tarrant County jury has reportedly sentenced a gang member to a total of 50 years in prison for killing a young rapper last 2011 over a $40 Super Bowl bet between the suspect and the victim.

The recently convicted Brown fatally shot Jarami Thomas, 20 years old, last March 14, 2011, in a parking lot located in an Arlington convenience store.

Jurors reportedly deliberated for four hours last Monday in a Fort Worth courtroom before they sentenced Clevin Earl Brown Jr., 19 years old, to five years in prison for his engagement in an organized criminal activity and another 50 years for murder. The said sentences will run concurrently.

Fort Worth Seminary Announces Acquisition of New Dead Sea Scrolls Fragment

FORT WORTH, Texas – Recently, the Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary reportedly unveiled its latest Dead Sea Scrolls treasure this week, which is a rare fragment of Leviticus.

Before the viewing of the scroll, attendees danced into the tune of Middle Eastern music and were treated to strong Arabic coffee which is brewed on an open fire by a Bedouin coming from Jordan dressed in robes of the desert.

The main attraction was the new Dead Sea Scrolls being acquired which they referred to as “paleo-Leviticus”. This is because it is written in ancient Hebrew and, some scholars reportedly state that it dated to the second century B.C.

Fort Worth School District Seeks Solution to Student Software Data System Problems

FORT WORTH, Texas – Problems with a student data software system which produced incomplete grade reports, inaccurate transcripts, and incorrect attendance records led the Fort Worth school district to look for new software vendors.

District officials had the current vendor, Tyler Technologies, on notice last November, informing the firm that it had 30 days to solve the problems with the school’s system. The company had been working with the district, however the problems persisted.

Superintendent Walter Dansby reportedly stated that the system still crashes during high-usage periods and that it has trouble identifying students in specific programs to help them track information.

Forth Worth Building Renamed

FORT WORTH, TexasCrescent Real Estate Holdings reportedly announced the renaming of the landmark Carter Burgess Plaza. It is now officially named as 777 Main. The renaming of the building reflects the passing of the name tenant, Carter & Burgess, which has lost its identity after being acquired by Jacobs Engineering.

The building opened as Continental Plaza when in it was built in 1982 by Woodbine Development Corp., and it then became UPR Plaza in 1998, when Union Pacific Resources was based there. After that company had been bought out and then moved to Houston, the building was renamed Carter Burgess Plaza last 2000.

FORT WORTH, Texas — U.S. Representative Ron Paul may still have his plans of continuing in the presidential race, and he is not backing out yet.

However, the Lake Jackson doctor did reportedly state that fellow Republican Rick Santorum’s decision to suspend his campaign has also led some people to ask about his own presidential race plans.

Ron Paul, who trails Mitt Romney and Newt Gingrich, reiterated regarding his themes of personal liberty, limited government, and a balanced budget.

New Apartments Planned in Fort Worth

FORT WORTH, Texas – Recent reports state that the apartment buildings are planned for popular neighborhoods on the near-south and near-west sides of Fort Worth.

The CDK Realty Advisors in Dallas, a commercial real estate investment firm has reportedly joined with the Dallas Police and Fire Pension System to build Parkside Apartments at So7. The construction began on the second phase of 229 units, alongside Trinity Park off West Seventh Street.

Dallas-based Lang Partners is also building along Lancaster Avenue at Currie, Bledsoe and Norwood streets and that two buildings will total about 300 apartments.

Musical Group Foreigner Performs at the Flying Saucer

FORT WORTH, Texas – Members of the Paschal High School choir may have had their performance of lifetime while they sang as backup to the internationally known rock band, Foreigner, who recently performed in front of a huge crowd which included the mayor.

The musical group sang on Monday night at the new Flying Saucer.

The crowd who was in attendance was standing while singing every word, and Kelly Hansen, Foreigner’s lead vocalist, stood with the students as they sang the chorus to ‘I Want to Know What Love Is’. After their performance, Hansen approached the students backstage and offered a quick round of high-fives.

Bike Patrol Certification School Initiated in Fort Worth

FORT WORTH, Texas – Recently, 25 sworn officers, who included two Fort Worth captains and four XTO security guards attended at the Fort Worth Police and Fire Training Academy for an intense 40-hour bike patrol certification school.

The training program had been created by the Law Enforcement Bicycle Association, which is a national certification organization created in 1987 “with the birth of modern-day police cycling.”

The class also included officers from the Benbrook Police Department, which is reportedly starting a bike patrol program around Lake Benbrook.
