For quite a few years now it has been well-known that chiropractic manipulation is an effective treatment for patients suffering with low back pain. It is also known that chiropractic adjustments<\/strong><\/em> for neck pain work very well, but there has not been a large scale research study before that showed statistically this was the case. Well now there is one. A large university research project at a Minnesota included 300 patients and looked at those suffering from neck pain.<\/p>\n

Patients were separated into three treatment groups. The first included those who were treated with narcotic medications. The second group included patients who were given a home exercise program and advice. The third group included those who were treated with chiropractic neck adjustments. The groups were followed for over 4 months, and were evaluated with data from multiple time points during those months.<\/p>\n

The results of the study showed that at every time point of value weighted, chiropractic neck adjustments gave patients better pain relief than the other 2 treatment methods. This persisted for over the 4 months that were looked at. this study was published in the Journal of Pain and represents a landmark achievement in chiropractic treatment. Effectiveness of chiropractic treatment for neck pain has been debated for years and this helps to solidify its effectiveness for the problem.<\/p>\n

What it also does is put into perspective the risk versus benefit profile for chiropractic neck adjustments. Considerable debate has occurred over the last few years with the guards to the risk of cervical adjustments. Multiple research studies have shown the risk of a serious adverse event to be between 1 in 1,000,000 to 2,000,000 treatments. The adverse event complication that is typically discussed is either paralysis, stroke, or death from the treatment. This risk represents a lower number than the chance of a patient getting into a car accident on the way to being treated by his or her chiropractor. The risks are present but are considered extremely low. Professionals should advise their treatments of these low potential risks, so that the patient is fully educated on what could happen.<\/p>\n

So now there is sufficient evidence to state chiropractic adjustments for neck pain have a statistically significant chance of improving a patient’s pain, and that pain relief is better than either a home exercise program or narcotic medications. Any time a non-operative method for pain relief shows effectiveness in a research study, that is a magnanimous achievement to helping patients in times of suffering.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
